The U.S. House on Friday approved a gun reform bill with support from Congressman Fred Upton. He says the Safer Communities Act would improve public safety through gun safety, school safety, and mental health reforms. The legislation aims to address mental health, incentivize states to pass red flag laws, and close the boyfriend loophole” by preventing people convicted of domestic abuse from owning a gun. The current law only applies to domestic violence cases in which the victim and suspect are married or have children. Upton noted the bill passed a month to the day after the school shootings in Uvalde, Texas. He says there are “those of us across the Capitol who realize we have a real problem and doing the same old nothing is not a solution.” The U.S. Senate approved the bill Thursday and the House passed it 234 to 193 Friday. It now goes to the president.
