The Benton Harbor City Commission chambers will be getting some technology upgrades following action this past week by the body. Commissioners were considering a $67,000 plan to purchase new equipment like microphones and cameras so meetings can be broadcast remotely to the community in a better way. Right now, the commission broadcasts meetings on YouTube, but viewers can’t see PowerPoint presentations or the audience. During Tuesday’s meeting, there were complaints from some commissioners about federal ARPA funds being used for the upgrades, but Commissioner Juanita Henry said improvements are needed and it’s time to make them happen.

“I’m kind of disappointed that we’re pinching off of the ARPA money for things like this, but it’s more important for the residents to be informed with what the government is doing than it is for me to bicker about where the money’s coming from,” Henry said. “So, I’m encouraging us all to please pass this.”

Mayor Marcus Muhammad said the microphones in the chambers are old and citizens need better meeting access from home. In end end, only Mayor Pro Tem Duane Seats voted against the upgrades in their current form, although he said improvements are needed. Also Monday, commissioners approved a contract with MunicipalOne for a website redesign and maintenance. The cost is about $3,700 per year over five years.
