There will be a series of open houses next month on the Berrien County Trails Master Plan. The Southwest Michigan Planning Commission’s Marcy Hamilton tells WSJM News work started on the plan last winter as the Friends of Berrien County Trails develop a vision for the county.

“We’re trying to be inclusive and include all trails, looking at what’s existing in the county right now and then mapping out a future vision of where we want to see more of these trails in our community,” Hamilton said.

Hamilton says work on the plan should wrap up in the fall.

“Then we’ll be taking it around to all the municipalities in Berrien County and also the county itself, asking them to endorse or adopt the plan.”

The master plan covers hiking trails, water trails, biking trails, and even horseback riding trails. The open houses in August will be the public’s chance to weigh in and suggest the inclusion of anything missed. They will be held in Niles, Coloma, New Buffalo, and Benton Harbor.
