The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade now kicks the issue of abortion back to the states, at least until a federal law on abortion is passed. This means the views of state lawmakers on abortion now matter. During last week’s forum with the five candidates for the Michigan House in the 38th District, we asked the three Republicans and two Democrats what they think. Republican Troy Rolling noted he has the endorsement of Right to Life.

“We need to have pro-life candidates in office to be able to handle that,” Rolling said. “The 1931 law is in place now. I think it needs to stay in place.”

The 1931 state law bans all abortions in Michigan except when a mother’s life is in danger. Republican Kevin Whiteford said abortion should be a state issue.

“I am pro-life,” Whiteford said. “I believe in life at conception. I believe that pro-life is conception all the way to the end of life.”

Republican George Lucas said he’s pro-life. Democrat Joey Andrews said he is pro-choice, “full stop.”

” I believe that the choice to get an abortion should be between a woman and her doctor, a woman and her family, or just the woman and herself, but not the woman and her politician,” Andrews said.

Democrat Annie Brown said she is pro-choice, noting she’s the only woman in the race and adding she’s also the only one who’s had a miscarriage. She said all abortions are painful decisions, but they’re to be made by the woman affected. All five are running in their party’s primary, set for August 2.
