A 78-year-old Illinois woman is lucky to be alive Tuesday after reportedly suffering a medical emergency while in Lake Michigan.

The Allegan County Sheriff’s Office reported that at about 4:44 p.m. Tuesday, they received reports of a possible drowning in the waters off Oval Beach in Saugatuck. By the time emergency services were contacted, good Samaritans on the beach had already pulled the victim from the water and started administering CPR.

Witnesses stated the victim was on a paddle board or kayak when she suffered a medical emergency and fell into the water. They stated that the victim was under water for approximately one to five minutes before she was rescued and pulled to the shore. Emergency medical services arrived on scene and were able to get a pulse on the victim. She was then transported by ambulance to a local Hospital for further medical treatment.

The Allegan County Sheriff’s Office thanked the Saugatuck Fire Department, Douglas City Police Department, Holland AMR and citizens on the beach for their assistance.
