St. Joseph City Commissioners have given high marks to City Manager John Hodgson. In his annual performance evaluation, done Monday night, commissioners found Hodgson continued to lead city staff in an effective and responsible manner over the past year. Mayor Laura Goos writes a few of Hodgson’s accomplishments during that time include successful negotiations of several union contracts, continuous navigation of the COVID pandemic and its effects on staffing, building accessibility, leadership, and support for infrastructure improvements. She notes Hodgson this year also helped bring in several new department heads due to retirements. They include finance director, director of public works, assessor, clerk, and business development director. The commission writes, “John’s strengths continue to be in his ability to effectively manage both our fiduciary responsibilities through our capital expenditures and overall annual budget as well as his ability to lead our city staff through their respective projects and duties from all aspects of city government.” Hodgson has been given a $7,000 performance bonus in lieu of a salary increase. His salary will be reviewed again next year.
