The Van Buren Conservation District will hold Healthy Water Week this week. The district’s Kyle Mead tells WSJM News county residents can stop by the office in Paw Paw all week to have water from their home screened for nitrates and to learn about what they can do to protect the water.

“The big goal is education,” Mead said. “It’s important for people to understand that drinking water from their wells isn’t treated or regulated in any way. It’s literally like a straw in the ground, so it’s important to test that regularly and know what you’re drinking, especially if you have elderly folks in the house or younger ones.”

Mead says people don’t always know how to properly dispose of household chemicals, test their well water, or maintain their septic systems. Healthy Water Week will help teach them. Anyone can stop by the Van Buren Conservation District office this week between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. You can find information on collecting a water sample for screening right here.
