Tuesday is primary election day in Michigan. Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson expects two to two and a half million voters to go to the polls, back at pre-pandemic levels. Western Michigan University chair of the political science department, John Clark, says some incumbents are being faced with new voters because of redistricting.

“There are a lot of unknowns,” says Clark. “Even some old candidates are facing new voters, and it’s not always clear what those new voters are gonna do.”

Clark says many primary voters are people who hold really strong partisan views and so it’s not a great representation of the whole electorate.
