A giant slide at Belle Isle State Park in Detroit has gotten national attention after videos of people speeding and flying down the slide went viral over the past week. Ron Olson with the Department of Natural Resources, which runs the park, says there’s no doubt the slide will be a popular attraction when it opens again Friday.

“Some people inherently seek adventure and that’s probably why there is a thrill to ride down the slide. We’re trying to get a balance so that it’s a good, fun ride but is something that done in a safe a manner as we can do for a slide like that.”

Olson says more than 500 people went down the slide last week before it was closed down so workers could wash the slide’s surface to make it slower.
