Unit 1 of the Cook Nuclear Plant in Bridgman is shut down for repairs. Indiana Michigan Power says the unit was shut down just before 2 p.m. Sunday due to a trip of its #3 reactor coolant pump motor. Officials say the unit trip did not impact electric service and the reactor unit is in stable condition. Each of the two reactors has four reactor coolant pumps that provide forced primary coolant flow to remove and transfer heat generated in the reactor core to the steam generators. That creates steam to power the turbine generator. Officials say the cause of the trip is still under investigation. An estimate on returning the unit to service was not given.
