The chief of police in Hartford is being accused of selling painkillers that were dropped off in the department’s medicine collection box. WWMT reports that was the reason for a June 30 search of the Hartford Police Department. The station says the Michigan Attorney General’s office is investigating Chief Tressa Beltran and will determine if she faces charges. Court documents show two dozen Hydrocodone pills were missing from the department’s drug collection box and were listed as evidence in the search warrant. An investigation by the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department and the South Haven Police Department led to the pills being placed in the collection box. Beltran was then told they’d been dropped off. The pills later went missing, and Beltran was the only one with a key to the box. Her attorney told WWMT his client maintains her innocence. She remains on leave.
