Drivers are advised to watch out for Adopt a Highway volunteers while out on the road starting this weekend and through next Sunday. That’s because there will be thousands of them out picking up trash along roads. Michigan Department of Transportation spokesperson Dan Weingarten told us this year Adopt a Highway has more than 2,900 community groups signed up to help keep the roadways clean.

“The volunteer groups have an interest in their local communities,” Weingarten said. “It shows their support and pride in their local area, and they get a sign for their group that shows they’ve taken ownership or responsibility for their segment.”

Adopt-A-Highway volunteers regularly collect more than 60,000 bags of litter annually. Weingarten says the volunteers wear yellow-green vests and everyone should give them plenty of space. Anyone interested in signing up for Adopt a Highway more can go to Michigan.gov/AdoptAHighway.
