Fruit growers in Michigan have been battling a spotted wing fruit fly that’s been damaging crops in Michigan and nationwide to the tune of $700 million a year. U.S. Senator Gary Peters of Michigan has introduced a bill for research to help mitigate the problem.

“As you increase production of the fruits, it keeps inflation rates down as well by making sure there’s a steady supply of fruits that we enjoy as consumers,” says Peters. “This is an important piece of legislation to provide research dollars to help our growers across the state of Michigan.”

Peters says Michigan State University is a leader in agricultural research and he believes they can help find ways to help the fruit growers.
