Road fatality statistics are indicating many drivers don’t know about their state’s “move over” laws. AAA of Michigan spokesperson Adrienne Woodland tells WSJM News that’s why AAA has launched the “Move Over for Me” campaign to remind everyone what to do when there’s a vehicle stopped on the side of the road.

“All 50 states including the District of Columbia have a move over law, where essentially, if you see first responders, and that includes tow providers, on the side of the road, you need to slow down and move over,” Woodland said.

What if you can’t move over?

“If you can’t get over, it’s really important to slow down so that you can safely pass those who are on the side of the road.”

Woodland says nearly 350 people are struck and killed outside a disabled vehicle each year nationally. Meanwhile, AAA surveys find about a quarter of drivers don’t even know about their state’s move over law. AAA’s Move Over for Me campaign will run all month with social media messages reminding everyone of their responsibility to give disabled vehicles a break.
