The mayors of Portage and Kalamazoo are in agreement with Congressman Fred Upton that a plan to consolidate postal sorting into the U.S. Postal Service facility on South 9th Street in Oshtemo instead of at nearly two-dozen local post offices is a mistake. Upton thinks some mail carriers will quit.

“They may not want to work. They may just say, ‘You know what? I’m just gonna go do something else.’”

He says the trip will add an hour at least to some mail carriers workdays. In bad weather, officials say their mail will be delayed or possibly even not delivered due to delays. Upton is urging people to write letters to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to ask him to reconsider the plan. It would impact carriers from Van Buren, Cass, Allegan, St. Joseph, and Kalamazoo counties.
