After months of closures, a busy Berrien County bridge is back open.

The Berrien County Road Department announced Tuesday that the Walton Road Bridge in Buchanan Township has been re-opened. The bridge serves as on of the primary entrances to the city of Buchanan for people traveling from the north on U.S. 31, and work had been ongoing since November 2021.

The original date of re-opening was set for after Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11.

According to the road department, the work – which included structural and surface repairs – will provide continued life and use of the Walton Road Bridge over the St Joseph River.

In a press release, the road department said it is excited to share the improved Walton Road Bridge with all users, and they appreciate the public for their continued patience during this project.

Local brewpub River Saint Joe took to Instagram to share their excitement as well, saying “We’re excited to announce that the Walton Road bridge is open! After five months of being closed, it’s back. Thanks to all the hard work of those who make important improvements like this to our community and to the community for making the drive.”
