Republican Kevin Whiteford says he’s pleased with how his campaign was run, regardless of who wins the Michigan House race in the 38th District. We caught up to him election night, and Whiteford said throughout the campaign, he was able to set up a big tent. He pointed to the crowd at his election party in St. Joseph.

“You’ll see Trumpers, non-Trumpers, We the Parents, Stand Up Michigan, all kinds of Republicans, which is what I plan on doing, bringing tons of people together, as well as the Democrats,” Whiteford said. “And I believe I’m going to speak to the Democrats who are moderate. Anybody who is on the far right, far left, I’m not going to allow them to scream or dictate what happens.”

Whiteford said if he goes to Lansing, his priorities will be reducing the income tax and eliminating the income tax for seniors. Meanwhile, Democrat Joey Andrews said Tuesday night when you speak to people, they listen about issues key to them.

“Skilled trades, affordable housing, getting the short term rental crisis under control, things that matter here,” Andrews said. “Also, between phones and doors, we reached out to over 75,000 individuals this year…I think it matters.”

Andrews said if elected, he wants to serve on the House Energy Committee because of the region’s nuclear plants and because of climate change. The 38th District hugs the Lake Michigan shoreline all the way from New Buffalo to Saugatuck.
