The emergency dredging of the St. Joseph Harbor is delayed due to weather. King Company of Holland was picked for the contract by the US Army Corps of Engineers after a 630-foot long freighter ran aground due to sand and debris on the lake floor. St. Joseph Harbormaster Mike Moran tells our partners at WSBT-22 King Company was supposed to have the over 14,000 cubic yards of debris cleared by the end of this month.

“If the weather isn’t cooperating, if the waves are too rough or the winds are too high, we can’t get the equipment towed down safely, so right now we’re just waiting for the weather to cooperate.”

King Company has dredged the harbor previously. Large vessels will not be allowed in the harbor until the dredging is complete, which may need to be delayed until spring.
