St. Joseph City Commissioners have signaled their support for a project that will result in the power lines at West Basin Marina being moved underground. At a Monday meeting, the city commission approved some distribution easements with Indiana Michigan Power to make way for the project. West Basin Manager Andrew Peters tells us this will benefit both the marina and the neighborhood.

“On the marina side, we’ll be able to increase our boat storage by at least 30 boats every year, and for the community around us, besides any issues with weather-related power issues, it will also just beautiful by removing power lines and poles from the beautiful views that we have.”

The marina is self-funded, meaning this project won’t cost taxpayers anything. Peters said the work will cost the marina around $250,000 and will involve several contractors. Thanks to the additional revenue caused by the extra boat storage the project will create, he estimates the cost will have been recouped in about five years. There isn’t yet a start date for the work.
