Lincoln Township officials have met with representatives of the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy to discuss possible improvements that could be made at Township Beach. Brandon Mieras with Williams & Works, an engineering firm, told the township board of trustees Tuesday there are limitations to what can be done due to all the wetlands and critical dune areas there. However, he told us there are some upgrades that could be made.

“The goal is to increase the public’s access – particularly people with mobility challenges, people who like to bring in paddleboards or kayaks, and things like that to enjoy Lake Michigan – that they have a place to drive in, to turn around,” Mieras said. “If they have mobility challenges, maybe to find a few parking spaces for them, and we would need to work around the dunes, the wetlands, as much as practical.”

Maps are being prepared now to outline which areas are off limits. Mieras said the township needs to get those from EGLE and then some planning could be done. Trustees noted the beach just isn’t as big as it used to be due to erosion in recent years. Mieras said it’s hoped something could start to come together next summer or fall, or possibly in early 2024.
