Using digital devices to calm young kids might not be the best idea. A new University of Michigan study found an association between device-calming and emotional consequences, which was especially high among young boys and the hyperactive. Developmental behavioral pediatrician with UM Health C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, Dr. Jenny Radesky, is the lead author.

“Our goal in helping children get ready for kindergarten and elementary school is that they have frustration tolerance where something negative happens and they can pause, ask for help, or figure out how to handle the emotion.”

Dr. Radesky says alternative calming options include sensory techniques like hugging or jumping or music. Over 400 parents and children were monitored for the study.
