With inflation taking a larger bite out of everyone’s wallets, getting some extra money would be a good thing. The Michigan Treasury Department currently has more than $2 billion in unclaimed property. To see if you may have unclaimed property, Terry Stanton from the Michigan Treasury Department advises that you visit their website for more information.

“We recommend folks check the website every six months or so for their name, a relative’s name, mom and dad’s name, whatever the case might be,” says Stanton. “There is no statute of limitations on claiming. If we receive the property 20 years ago, that money and that amount is always claimable by the owner or the owner’s heirs as we hold it in perpetuity.”

The Detroit News reports that in 2022, they mailed out nearly $134 million in checks to the owners of unclaimed property that ended up in the state’s possession.
