South Haven Teacher Wins Michigan Lottery Excellence In Education Award

A South Haven North Shore Elementary teacher has won a Michigan Lottery Excellence In Education award. Mary Phillips is a STEM teacher in the Van Buren County district. She has received a $1,500 prize along with a plaque, and a $500 grant to her school district. Phillips incorporates esports in her curriculum and says esports is her favorite unit to teach. She says the vision is simple to have fun and play a role in keeping the games fun for everyone. Phillips says the students are gamers, team coaches, marketing managers, shoutcasters, graphic designers, and IT support. She was nominated by a family member for the award. Phillips earned her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Western Michigan University and has been a teacher for the past 18 years.
