Recycling companies are receiving a lot more boxes and recycling material this time of year, but some of it may be costing consumers more. Things like ribbons, holiday lights, ornaments, and other Christmas décor often gets lumped into the recyclables this time of year, but can’t actually be recycled. When places have to remove it from the batch, it could result in extra charges and fees from slowing down production, according to Michael Csapo, the general manager for the Resource Recovery and Recycling Authority of Southwest Oakland County.

“Just because it might be some type of plastic, that doesn’t mean that it is recyclable. So it’s a matter of making sure what you’re throwing into the containers is recyclable because if it’s not, it creates safety hazards at the facility and reduces our efficiency.”

Csapo says another item that often gets lumped into recycles, but is actually hazardous, are batteries.
