Now rolling is the new Benton Harbor Area Schools Community Roar, a bus that houses a mobile computer lab that can be used by residents to learn more about district services. The bus is loaded with eight laptops and internet so anyone can explore the programs available at the school district from anywhere within the community. District student support services chief Paul Korson tells us the idea was pitched by Interim Superintendent Kelvin Butts to take the school district directly to families.

“We have an amazing community, but they don’t always know what opportunities we have within the district, and some of those hurdles might be transportation to the school or access to the internet,” Korson said. “So, we wanted to make sure that we are able to help lessen whatever barriers we can and meet them where they are, even if that means literally going to them in person and kind of parking outside their house.”

Korson says with the Community Roar, Benton Harbor Area Schools can meet the community where it is. It will appear at special events and a schedule will be released in the coming weeks. Parents will be able to access district information systems via the Community Roar. It was made possible due to support from the Whirlpool Foundation.
