This is Radon Action Month, when everyone is advised of the dangers of radon and how they can protect themselves. Berrien County Health Department environmental health services manager Nick Margaritis tells us radon is a gas that leaks into homes through floors at ground level. It’s naturally caused by the breakdown of uranium in soil and rocks.

“In Michigan it is expected that one out of four houses has exposure to radon, and radon is the second leading cause behind smoking for lung cancer,” Margaritis said.

The Berrien County Health Department is offering everyone free radon testing kits. Margaritis says you should have your home tested for radon every few years. Anyone who wants a radon testing kit should call the Berrien County Health Department.
