Benton Harbor Mayor Marcus Muhammad is seeking another term. If he wins in November, he’ll serve for a third term. Muhammad says the city has endured several challenges during his time as mayor and come out on top. He cites the emergency management crisis, the near shutdown of Benton Harbor High School, COVID-19, and the lead water line crisis as among the things the city has weathered under his leadership. Muhammad says on social media, “the residents have asked me to continue and finish the job.” Muhammad was first elected mayor in 2009. Also running for the position is Gwen Johnson, founder of the SHARP Foundation, a group that works to reduce police violence. In addition to the mayor’s office, there will be four city commission seats on the ballot in November.
