Upcoming special elections take place May 2. A number of the questions on area ballots include school bonds. One of the larger school districts in Berrien County is Lakeshore Public Schools.

Lakeshore’s May 2023 bond is for $19.9 million.

Last year, the school district surveyed area residents on what they might support in a bond issue. Based on the results, Lakeshore leaders crafted a high-priority needs proposal.

Superintendent Greg Eding says among a number of things, it will go toward replacing boilers, roofs, resurfacing parking lots, and bringing schools into compliance with the Americans with Disability Act.

“The facilities should not get in the way of student learning and it’s starting to become that way right now. That’s starting to happen,” said Superintendent Eding.

The scope of the bond work includes Hollywood Elementary, Roosevelt Elementary, Stewart Elementary, Middle School, High School, and Transportation projects.

If the bond is approved, residents are expected to pay $90 annually, or $7.50 per month, for a home with an estimated value of $200,000.

Information about the bond question is available on Lakeshore school’s website, including the full list of planned improvements.

The vote is set for May 2.
