Childhood marriage would be banned under a package of bills moving forward in Lansing. Lawmakers on the House Judiciary Committee passed the plan to outlaw marriage for anyone under 18. Pastor Austin Kreutz told lawmakers to support the bills.

“I support these bills because I believe that a child does not have the ability or ethical ability, moral ability, to make that decision, particularly when the cerebral cortex of an individual does not mature until about age 25.”

A similar bill outlawing child marriage has been introduced in the state Senate.
