Michigan Works and the Michigan Department of Transportation have teamed up for a summer jobs program for young people. Mary Morphey with Kinexus in Benton Harbor tells us the Youth Development Mentoring Program will hire 40 young people to do manual labor including grounds maintenance, park and ride upkeep, and more. She says it’s a good way for someone between 16 and 24 to earn money this summer.

“Not only do youths get paid while they’re on summer break to do some labor, they will also be receiving some mentoring throughout the summer, which is an awesome experience when you look at the young people potentially being hired into other positions after they’re done with school,” Morphey said. “They’ll also be learning about the engineering and transportation career pathways and all the positions that are needed to make those things run.”

The program is open to anyone between 16 and 24 who is enrolled in high school, a GED program, college, or who has a high school diploma, GED, or degree. They’ll work 40 hours per week through September, earning between $15.50 and $21.50 an hour. Morphey says the deadline to apply is June 19. You can find the application page right here.
