Set for this Thursday is a special engagement at the Berrien County Health Department with an addiction specialist. Berrien County coalitions “Voice. Change. Hope.” and Families Against Narcotics are hosting a community event to talk about the root nature of addiction and why it should be viewed and treated as a brain disease. The Berrien County Health Department’s Gillian Conrad tells WSJM News a focus is opioids.

“This is something that communities across America are trying to understand and address,” Conrad said.

The guest speaker will be Dr. Bruce Springer from Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services in Grand Rapids.

“Dr. Springer has more than 30 years of experience in the field of addiction treatment and works with patients who are dealing with opioid addiction,” Conrad said.

Every day, more than 90 Americans die after overdosing on opioids. The event at the health department on Napier Avenue in Benton Township will address that growing problem. It runs from 6 to 8 p.m.
