Influenza, better known of the flu, has been in the news nationwide due to a widespreadoutbreak in the south, and Van Buren County hasn’t been immune to cases. Van Buren-Cass District Health Department Medical Director Larry Wile spoke with WSJM news about the subject.

“In the last two weeks, we’ve definitely seen a good spike in the flu illness,” Wile said.

Dr. Wile says even if you received a flu vaccination, you can still get the flu.

“Statistics this year is that the vaccine is only about 30% effective,” Wile said.

However, he says the vaccine could still reduce the severity of your case if you get the flu. Wile says it is not too late to get the shot. He urges people to call their doctor or the health department in Hartford.
