A new panel of students, parents, teachers, public health officials, and school administrators will be formed by Governor Whitmer to formalize the process for determining how schools might be able to reopen this fall. The new panel will send its recommendations to the COVID-19 Task Force on Education which is part of the State Emergency Operations Center and was formed a few months ago.
“This plan to return will align with the MI Safe Start Plan,” said the governor during Friday afternoon’s briefing. “It will provide scenarios for what school opening might look like, with recommendations based on the public health reality on the ground. It will provide guidance to our school leaders about what actions must be taken to ensure our students and educators are safe.”
The new panel will have up to 25 members, and applications to serve on it can be sent in now at Michigan.gov/Appointments.
“We’re going to come together as a state to ensure that our students, our families, educators and communities can plan for a safe, equitable, and effective return to school,” said Whitmer.
The governor did not know if any recommendations will be made in time for any in-person summer learning for students who are behind.
