The CDC is recommending that vaccinated people mask up in the U.S. while indoors in areas that have become hot spots for the coronavirus. Dr. Matthew Simms, the head of Infectious Disease Research at Beaumont Hospital, told Michigan News Network this week the recommendation comes after several breakthrough cases of the highly contagious Delta variant in those who have had the shots.

“The vaccine is 80 something percent protective against getting the Delta variant, and that’s still great protection, and even more, it’s 94% effective, if you do break through, against serious disease, preventing hospitalization, death,” Simms said.

Michigan is not considered a hot spot for COVID right now. Berrien County’s transmission rate is listed as moderate.
