A state of emergency has been declared for St. Joseph County by governor Whitmer after severe weather August 11 and 12 caused destruction throughout the county. Even though the declaration exists, the St. Joseph County Director of Emergency Services Erin Goff told Michigan News Network there is still a process to complete.

“It’s kind of an application process,” Goff said. “It’s not a guaranteed funding source. Now that there is a governor’s declaration, the local entities who have expended or had extraordinary financial burden as a result of this storm, they can request thing funding, but there’s still a few more steps before you can get to the part.”

Straight line winds of more than 90 miles per hour tore through the county. It caused extensive damage to trees and power outages.
