Michigan Gas Utilities is warning customers about an increase in home heating prices coming this winter. Spokesperson Matt Cullen tells WSJM News there’s a general increase in the price of natural gas.

“The daily average price for natural gas has more than doubled this year, and prices are at their highest level in the past ten years,” Cullen said. “This increase that we’re seeing is mainly due to tight supplies as well as an increase worldwide in demand for natural gas.”

Cullen says the average residential customer is likely looking at a monthly increase of $43 in their gas bill. He notes Michigan Gas does what it can to keep costs down.

“Natural gas is a pass through expense. Michigan Gas Utilities does not earn a profit on the gas that we purchase for our customers. Simply put, the price that we pay for natural gas is the exact same price that our customers pay.”

Cullen says customers who find themselves struggling to pay their winter heating bill should call Michigan Gas first. They can connect you with assistance programs and get you into a payment plan. He also advises everyone to have their furnace inspected ahead of the winter, and to check their homes for drafts. Also, consider keeping your thermostat lower this winter, especially at night or when you’re not home.
