The Autism Alliance of Michigan is working to ensure that autistic people understand the importance of getting vaccinated against COVID. The organization is also reaching out to parents whose autistic children are now eligible to be vaccinated. Research has shown that people with severe autism can face a higher risk from the virus. Spokesperson Kathleen Larson spoke to Michigan News Network.

“Individuals with autism may be at a higher risk for contracting COVID-19,” Larson said. “This is a highly communicable disease, and it may be difficult for individuals on the autism spectrum to wear a mask, wash hands, and physical distance to the extent that is recommended. We want to prevent you from getting sick in the first place, and COVID-19 vaccination  is a way to do that.”

Larson says the organization encourages everyone with autism get vaccinated. Visit their website for more information at AutismAllianceOfMichigan.org.
