Legislation designed to prevent a repeat of January 6, 2021 has been introduced in Congress with the backing of Congressman Fred Upton. He tells WSJM News the Electoral Count Reform and Presidential Transition Improvement Act changes a couple of things about an 1887 law that governs how presidential election results are certified by Congress.

“It identifies specifically what the vice president’s role is, that the vice president is not able to change the outcome of the electoral vote, something that President Trump wanted Vice President Pence to do,” Upton said. “It also raises the threshold of states or members of Congress objecting to a state’s total. Right now, it only has to be one member in the House and only one member in the Senate.

Upton says the threshold would be 20% or more of the chamber in question. He tells us January 6 was a breakdown of the system. The legislation has bipartisan support in both the House and Senate.
