A building which aids in the care of elderly residents will be receiving some more assistance of its own.

The St. Joseph Township board Monday approved bids for the removal of a landscaping wall and additional landscaping services of the Senior Nutrition Services building at 1708 Colfax Avenue.

The building, which is owned by the township, is home to Meals on Wheels of Southwest Michigan. It has been getting extensive renovations over the past several years, according to Supervisor Roger Seely. Last month, trustees approved a $145,000 bid from McGuire’s Professional Construction of Benton Harbor to renovate the outside of the building.

Second Nature Landscaping will handle the removal of a wall for $10,400 and RootBound will provide new plants for the exterior for $3,291.

“We’ve been fixing it up for the last four or five years – all new air conditioning, heating, flooring and so forth,” Seely said. “Now it’s the outside that needs to be done.”

Seely said the project will start “as soon as the weatherman lets them.”

In other business, trustees also awarded McGuire’s Professional Construction a $50,838 contract for a project to improve the township hall building exterior.
