Governor Gretchen Whitmer has launched a new public service announcement to remind everyone of the new hands-free law in Michigan. The law bans holding a cell phone while driving. That means no texting, reading, or watching anything on your phone when behind the wheel. Whitmer says the law is a good thing.

“Ohio just recently changed their law, and they’ve already seen a demonstrable drop in terms of deaths,” Whitmer said.

The Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning says distracted driving needs to be taken as seriously as drunk driving or drugged driving because the behavior produces the same results. Violations of the new law will result in a $100 fine for the first offense and $250 for subsequent offenses.
