There’s no better way to celebrate 4th of July than with a bonfire, but the Michigan Department of Natural Resources is asking people to do it safely. Paul Rogers is with the DNR. He says when it’s time to put out your fire and head to bed, you need to do more than just dump water on it.

“Make sure the fire is completely out,” Rogers said. “Before you go to bed at night, make sure that you soak the fire well and that you stir it up. Don’t just put water on top because that can evaporate right off if there’s hot ashes underneath. Just stand back and start cooling it, and then keep stirring it as you put water on it to make sure it’s completely out.”

Rogers says the best time to have a fire is after 6 pm when the wind dies down. He says you should bring out a bucket of water or hose to put out your fire before you start it.
