Berrien County Animal Control is updating its hours for the summer to give people more time to stop by and meet its animals. Shelter manager Ashley Herr tells us the change comes following a recent report from a consultant.

“She recommended that we adjust our hours to be more user friendly since a lot of people are at work in the hours that we’re open,” Herr said. “So, we’re hoping that this change will help us get more animals adopted, more forever matches going on with them, and getting animals redeemed back with their owners a little bit better.”

The Berrien County Animal Control Shelter will now be open Tuesdays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. They’ll also be open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The shelter will be closed on Sundays and Mondays. Herr says they hope more people come by with the new hours because the shelter is about full.

“We are almost to the overflowing point. We’ve had a lot of animals. Especially with it almost being the Fourth of July, we have a lot of lost animals here, so we’re trying to get as many redeemed and back to their families as possible, and we’re also trying to get some adoptions going on to make some space that way as well.”

Herr notes they’ve got a Fourth of July special going on all week. Adoptions of both cats and dogs are just $4. Anyone with questions about licenses, adoptions, or animal resources can call the shelter. The summer hours will be in effect starting July 10.
