Late last week, WSJM reported a clever recruitment campaign from the Michigan State Police, riding the tails of the Barbie movie excitement in an effort to recruit more employees.

Not long after, the MSP pulled it back.

“MSP’s social media team values the contributions of our female members and out of respect for them we have removed our previous post about Barbie,” stated a follow-up social media post from MSP, without further explanation.

For those who missed it, the original post is above. Reaction to the post coming down was swift and largely in support of the MSP’s original marketing post:

  • It was fun, timely, and out of the box attention getting. Loved it!
  • It was a positive and empowering post. I showed it to my daughter who’s a freshman and starting to think about post-high school.
  • I would buy two!! One for me and one for my daughter who is a police officer in another state. I love it!!

Governor Gretchen Whitmer also distributed a Barbie-themed post, talking about working in state government. Those posts remain intact.
