With a primary for two city commissioner at large seats on the August 8 ballot, a candidate forum for Benton Harbor City Commission was held Wednesday.

Tyrone Davis, Emma Kinnard, Edward Isom, and Shaquille Turner were on hand, with City Commissioner Mary Alice Adams unable to attend.

The four present were asked why they’re right for the job.

Shaquille Turner said he brings a young perspective and understands what the people are going through. Emma Kinnard said she’s spent many years following city government and knows how it should operate. Commissioner Edward Isom said he’s “been in the trenches” as many developments came in recent years.

When asked about top priorities, Tyrone Davis said improving the city for everyone, adding “No one wants to live like they’re poor,” while Kinnard said she wants to serve all four wards equally.

Turner later said as a commissioner, he would be nothing like the current commissioners. Davis said for the body to function, the bickering has to stop.

Of the five on the ballot, four will proceed to the November election for commissioner at large in after the August 8 primary.
