Yankees 4, Tigers 1 – Judge ends 0-for-17 slide with 249th homer, helps Yankees beat Tigers 4-1
Aaron Judge ended an 0-for-17 slide with his 249th home run, Luis Severino pitched shutout ball for the second straight start following an alarming skid and the New York Yankees beat the Detroit Tigers 4-1 in a series opener. Judge walked in the fifth and scored on Gleyber Torres’ double, then combined with Torres for back-to-back homers in the seventh off Beau Brieske. Judge’s 29th homer of the season came in his 806th career game and he could become the fastest to 250 homers. Ryan Howard reached 250 in his 855th game in 2010, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Orioles 9, White Sox 0 – Rookie Grayson Rodriguez’s 6 1-hit innings help the Orioles handle the White Sox 9-0
Grayson Rodriguez allowed one hit over six innings, and the AL-best Baltimore Orioles clinched their second consecutive winning season with a 9-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Anthony Santander hit his 25th homer for Baltimore. The Orioles have won eight of 10 and increased their AL East lead over idle Tampa Bay to 2 1/2 games. The White Sox have lost 11 of 16 and were shut out for the 10th time this season. Baltimore’s shutout was its ninth. Rodriguez retired the first 11 batters before Luis Robert Jr. doubled to left. The only other baserunner the rookie allowed was a one-out walk in the sixth.

Brewers 6, Cubs 2 – Yelich hits leadoff homer as Brewers beat Cubs 6-2 for 9th straight win
Christian Yelich and Mark Canha homered during Milwaukee’s four-run first inning, and the Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 6-2 for their ninth consecutive victory. Wade Miley pitched six effective innings as Milwaukee increased its NL Central lead to five games over second-place Chicago. It’s the longest win streak for the Brewers since an 11-game run in 2021. Returning home after a 5-2 trip, Chicago committed two costly errors and finished with five hits. Ian Happ and Patrick Wisdom homered, but Jameson Taillon got off to a rough start.

MLB – Shooting that wounded 2 at Sox game likely involved gun fired inside stadium,
Chicago’s interim police superintendent says a shooting that wounded two women at Friday night’s Chicago White Sox-Oakland Athletics game most likely involved a gun that went off inside Guaranteed Rate Field. Officials have said little about where the bullets came from, or if someone brought a gun into the stadium. But, according to the Chicago Tribune, a police official said Monday that investigators have nearly ruled out the possibility that the shots came from outside the ballpark. Both wounded women, ages 26 and 42, were expected to recover from the shooting that occurred during the game’s fourth inning.

MLB – All 30 managers who started season are still employed, but the ax could come soon
It’s five months into the regular season and all 30 Major League Baseball managers who started the year with their respective teams are all still employed. That’s fairly rare but not totally uncommon. The ax could be coming soon. There are several managers who are in a tenuous position as the season winds down, including Aaron Boone, Buck Showalter, Phil Nevin and Bob Melvin. Also around baseball, Philadelphia’s Kyle Schwarber continues a historic all-or-nothing season and the Seattle Mariners continue their push to the top of the AL West.

NCAAFB – Michigan suspends offensive coordinator Moore for violating NCAA rules
Michigan offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore will be suspended for this week’s season-opening game as part of the school’s self-imposed penalties for violating NCAA rules that also led to coach Jim Harbaugh’s punishment. Harbaugh said Monday an analyst will be elevated to fill Moore’s spot on the staff Saturday against East Carolina. The school announced last week it decided Harbaugh would serve a three-game suspension to start the season due to NCAA recruiting infractions. Michigan handed down Harbaugh’s punishment in an attempt to get out in front of potential NCAA sanctions related to an investigation of impermissible contact with recruits.

NCAAFB – Interim coach David Braun says he’s ‘up to the challenge’ of leading Wildcats
Interim coach David Braun says he’s “up to the challenge” of leading Northwestern with the season opener this week. It’s certainly not what he envisioned when Pat Fitzgerald hired him as defensive coordinator last winter. Braun is navigating an unusual and difficult path. It takes another turn when the season opens with a rare Sunday game at Rutgers. Northwestern is facing more than a dozen lawsuits across multiple sports with allegations including sexual abuse of players by teammates, as well as racist comments by coaches and race-based assaults. Fitzgerald was fired July 10 after an investigation concluded the coaching staff should have known about ongoing hazing. Braun spent the past four years at FCS powerhouse North Dakota State.

Tennis – US Open – Coco Gauff comes back to win at the US Open
Coco Gauff has come back to win her first-round match at the U.S. Open after losing a set against an opponent who frustrated her with the time she took between points. Gauff came through a 30-point, 25-plus-minute game to begin the second set and wound up beating Laura Siegemund 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Some highly seeded players lost earlier Monday on Day 1 at the year’s last Grand Slam tournament. The No. 4 man, Holger Rune, and the No. 8 woman, Maria Sakkari, both exited.

Tennis – US Open honors Billie Jean King on 50th anniv. of equal prize money for women
After a rousing tribute from former first lady Michelle Obama, Billie Jean King on Monday celebrated the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Open becoming the first sporting event to offer equal prize money to female and male competitors, promising to never stop fighting to maintain that hard-won progress. “Our work is far from done,” King said in a speech to a packed Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd between matches in the night session. Obama introduced the 79-year-old tennis legend by recalling how King as the defending U.S. Open champion in 1973 rallied her fellow women players not to play in that year’s tournament unless women got the same pay as men.

Tennis – NYPD warns it has zero tolerance for drones at the US Open
The U.S. Open is a no-drone zone. The New York Police Department warned Monday on the Grand Slam event’s opening day that it has a zero-tolerance policy toward drones buzzing the tournament, and any seen hovering over Flushing Meadows will be taken out immediately. Exactly how was not specified, with NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence and Counterterrorism Rebecca Weiner saying only that the department “will be deploying our counter-drone capabilities.”

Soccer – Spanish federation ask president Rubiales to resign over his kiss of player
Leading officials within the Spanish Football Federation have asked suspended president Luis Rubiales to resign because of his behavior at the Women’s World Cup, including kissing a player on the lips after Spain won the championship match. The heads of the regional bodies say his “unacceptable behavior has caused great damage to the image of Spanish soccer.” The heads also want interim president Pedro Rocha to immediately withdraw the federation’s request to UEFA to suspend it from international competitions. The federation’s request for a suspension was widely seen as an attempt to silence some of Rubiales’ critics because a suspension would ban Spanish teams from competitions like the Champions League.

PWHL – New women’s pro hockey league provides sneak peak on its 6 markets
The newly established Professional Women’s Hockey League provided a sneak peak on where it’s six franchises will be based, a day before it is scheduled to make the news official. The PWHL’s newly launched social media account revealed the sites based on the only six accounts it is following with teams based in the New York tri-state area, Minnesota, Boston, Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa. Each market has an account with @PWHL as a prefix. The PWHL is scheduled to formally announce its inaugural six franchises during a video conference call on Tuesday.
