Doctors in Michigan see increase in strep throat cases

Michigan is seeing a surge in strep throat cases.

According to some doctors, current rates are the highest they’ve seen in years, and some doctors expect to see more through the rest of the year.

We asked Dr. Kevin Dazy, a pediatric specialist with Children’s Hospital of Michigan, why we’re seeing this spike in strep cases.

“Some of it has to do with this time of year, usually we do see a strep throat increase in the winter and spring month,” Dazy said. “It follows often our viral season.”

Dazy says symptoms can include fever, rash, and sore throat. But he says strep can really affect any part of the body, and can even lead to pneumonia and skin infections.

Thankfully, Dazy says strep can be easily treated with antibiotics.
