Halloween is here, and kids across Michigan are excited to go door to door for treats.

While it’s a running joke that parents only check their kid’s candy after trick-or-treating so that they can eat it, Oakland County Sheriff Bouchard says it’s a good idea to check for anything suspicious.

“If you’re going to have your kids go out a trick or treat, it should be a fun time,” Bouchard said. “We have no information that there’s any concern or threat in that realm. Just make sure that they go out, that they can see and the costumes don’t impair their visibility when they’re walking. Have them have a flashlight, and a good idea is after they get hoe, have them dump out all the candy with you there and inspect it.”

Bouchard also says to stay safe on the streets by dressing warm for the incoming cold weather and in light colors. That’s so that cars and other pedestrians can see you and your kids.
