The Van Buren Conservation District says 2023 has been a busy year for recycling.

Recycling coordinator Kalli Marshall tells us they hold recycling events throughout the year and offer two year-round drop off sites.

“Three times a year, we host recycling roundup events, which are our biggest events of the year,” Marshall said. “We collect household hazardous waste, electronics, foam, confidential shredding, and tires for recycling. Additionally, five times a year, we hold electronic and tire collection events as well.”

Marshall says all of that made a big difference in the past year.

“We increased most, if not all, our categories of service, including our electronics. We increased over 10,000 pounds for more than 87,000 pounds of electronics recycled.”

The collection of household hazardous waste increased by 37%, in total collecting more than 24,000 pounds of material.

The program in 2023 added some new services, like foam recycling and battery collection at nine sites around Van Buren County. Townships throughout the county contribute to the Resource Recovery Program with its costs this year totaling more than $235,000.

Marshall says the next schedule for recycling events will be released by the end of the year.
