Thousands of people who were wrongly accused of fraud by Michigan’s Unemployment Insurance Agency are close to receiving a settlement.
A hearing Monday in Lansing was to give the final approval to start sending checks.
Attorney Jennifer Lord represents those who were falsely accused.
“Back in 2013, the Unemployment Insurance Agency laid off all of their human fraud examiners and put this computer they decided to call MiDAS, which was the opposite of a touch of gold, in place with no human supervision, and the thing just went off the rails.”
Lord says the system falsely accused people of crimes and fraud, and even led people to the point bankruptcy. More than 3,000 people were affected.
The total average award will be around $7,000 dollars.
