Jaden Akins sank seven 3-pointers and scored a career-high 23 points to help Michigan State coach Tom Izzo notch his 700th career victory with an 81-62 romp over Michigan. Izzo, who took the reins at Michigan State in 1995 for his first and only head coaching job, has 288 losses. He becomes the 38th men’s coach to accomplish the feat. Izzo was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2016. Akins, a junior, made 8 of 13 shots for the Spartans (13-8, 5-5 Big Ten Conference), who beat the Wolverines (7-14, 2-8) for a sixth straight time at home. Jaelin Llewellyn scored 18 to lead the Wolverines, who have lost four in a row and nine of their last 10.

Toledo 88, WMU 63 – Simmons’ 19 lead Toledo past Western Michigan 88-63
Javan Simmons scored 19 points as Toledo beat Western Michigan 88-63 on Tuesday night. Simmons also had six rebounds for the Rockets (14-7, 8-1 Mid-American Conference). Ra’Heim Moss scored 15 points while shooting 5 of 6 from the field and 5 for 6 from the line, and added five rebounds and three steals. Tyler Cochran shot 6 of 7 from the field to finish with 12 points, while adding six rebounds. The Broncos (8-13, 5-4) were led by Titus Wright, who recorded 12 points and three steals. Javaughn Hannah added 11 points and three steals for Western Michigan. Jefferson Monegro also had 11 points, six assists and two steals.

CMU 84, NIU 77 – 2OT – McMillan sparks Central Michigan past Northern Illinois 84-77 in 2OT
Paul McMillan IV came off the bench to score seven of his 21 points in the second overtime and Central Michigan rallied to beat Northern Illinois 84-77 on Tuesday night. McMillan was 5-for-12 shooting, including 2 for 6 from 3-point range, and went 9 for 9 from the free-throw line for the Chippewas (12-9, 7-2 Mid-American Conference). Markus Harding added 18 points and nine rebounds. Anthony Pritchard scored 16.  Xavier Amos finished with 25 points and seven rebounds to pace the Huskies (6-14, 0-8), who have lost 10 in a row. Zarigue Nutter added 23 points and seven rebounds. David Coit scored 15.  Nutter’s layup with seven seconds left forced overtime tied at 63. Yanic Konan Niederhauser made two free throws with one second remaining to force a second extra period tied at 72.

Akron 77, EMU 46 – Freeman scores 17, Akron knocks off Eastern Michigan 77-46
Enrique Freeman scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Akron beat Eastern Michigan 77-46 on Tuesday night.  Sammy Hunter scored 12 points and added five rebounds and Tavari Johnson had 12 points and was 5 of 6 shooting (2 for 3 from 3-point range) for the Zips (16-5, 8-1 Mid-American Conference).  Tyson Acuff led the way for the Eagles (9-12, 2-7) with 12 points. Eastern Michigan also got 12 points from Orlando Lovejoy. In addition, Arne Osojnik finished with six points.  Eastern Michigan visits Northern Illinois on Saturday.

NCAABB – Big Ten won’t expand conference schedules and plans 15-team tournament
The Big Ten plans to stick with a 20-game conference schedule for men’s basketball and an 18-game schedule for women’s basketball when the league expands to 18 teams next year. The league also announced Tuesday that 15 of the 18 members will qualify for the Big Ten men’s and women’s basketball tournaments once Southern California, UCLA, Oregon and Washington arrive from the Pac-12. The Big Ten currently allows all 14 of its members to participate in the conference tournaments.

Gary Trent Jr. scored 24, Bruce Brown added 19 points and seven rebounds and the Toronto Raptors snapped a season-high five-game losing streak with a 118-107 win over the Chicago Bulls. Jordan Nwora scored 17 points in 19 minutes and Dennis Schroder added 16 points and 10 assists for the Raptors, who trailed by 16 in the second quarter but regained the lead late in the third and held on from there. DeMar DeRozan scored 25 points and Ayo Dosunmu had 21 for Chicago, which has lost three of four.

Celtics 129, Pacers 124 – Jayson Tatum scores 30, comes up with late blocks as Celtics hold off Pacers 129-124
Jayson Tatum scored 30 points and had two blocks in the final 30 seconds to help the Boston Celtics hold off the Indiana Pacers 129-124. Jaylen Brown added 25 points and Derrick White finished with 24 to help Boston win its season series with Indiana, 3-2. The Pacers eliminated the Celtics in the quarterfinal round of the In-Season Tournament in December. Aaron Nesmith led the Pacers with 26 points and 12 rebounds. Pascal Siakam finished with 23 points and Myles Turner added 17. All-Star Tyrese Haliburton had 13 points on 5-of-16 shooting and 10 rebounds.

NBA – Bulls’ Patrick Williams likely to miss at least 2 more weeks with foot injury
Chicago Bulls forward Patrick Williams is expected to miss at least two more weeks with an injured left foot. Williams’ foot issue prevented him from playing Sunday in a 104-96 victory at Portland. The Bulls announced Tuesday that the 6-foot-7 forward has acute bone edema and will get reassessed in about two weeks. The 22-year-old Williams is averaging 10 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 27.3 minutes this season.

NFL – Lions OC Ben Johnson is staying, turning down chance to be NFL head coach
Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has decided to stay with the team and turn down potential opportunities to be an NFL head coach next season, two people familiar with the situation tell The Associated Press. Johnson was a candidate to coach in Washington, where he was considered a front-runner, and with the Seattle Seahawks. Johnson helped the Lions win two playoff games in the same postseason for the first time in 67 years and reach the NFC championship game. One of the people tells The AP the Commanders are still interviewing Detroit defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn.

MLB – Tigers and Keith hope they have a win-win deal for player with no MLB experience
The Detroit Tigers and Colt Keith hope they have struck a win-win deal. Detroit is banking on Keith, who hasn’t faced a major league pitch, becoming a star and the 22-year-old infielder is guaranteed to make more than $28 million even if he’s a bust. Keith had had introductory news conference on Tuesday, overlooking a snow-covered Comerica Park. The deal includes three team options that could give Keith $64 million over nine seasons, and there are escalators that could increase the value of the deal to $82 million over nine years.

MLB – David Rubenstein has a deal to buy the Baltimore Orioles for $1.725 billion.
A person with knowledge of the deal says Carlyle Group Inc. co-founder David Rubenstein has reached an agreement to buy the Baltimore Orioles for $1.725 billion. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday night because the agreement had not been announced. Rubenstein is a Baltimore native. He will take over as the team’s controlling owner, and he’s assembled an investment team that includes Ares co-founder Michael Arougheti. The Angelos family has been in control of the Orioles since 1993, when Peter Angelos purchased the team for $173 million. Angelos’ son John is the team’s current chairman. The team recently reached a deal on a new lease extension at Camden Yards.
